We were looking for a cooking class in Siem Reap but didn't want to just be cooking in a restaurant or hotel which is where most of the classes seemed to be located. Lily's secret garden sounded so much more personal and local so we picked this cooking class and couldn't have been happier. We booked the afternoon cooking class and when Chris picked us up it turned out we were the only two people booked meaning we basically had a private session which was incredible. We visited the market which is quite an insight into local life however a lot of the meat and fish sellers are not here in the afternoon. I don't really think this detracted from the visit at all and was ideal for my wife as she doesn't like the meat stands at the markets! Onto the cooking class which is at their family home. Lily was great and very accommodating with my wife being vegetarian. She explained the herbs and plants in her garden before beginning the cooking. We learnt a lot from Lily and Chris about life in Cambodia as well as the cooking skills too. The food was great and I think the Cambodian Curry is probably one of the best curries I've had in my life. 100% recommended and it's fantastic value too when you think it includes a 3 course lunch or dinner cooked by yourself. Been to cooking classes in some countries, and this one is so personal you feel you're at home, which I prefer compared to hotel or restaurant classes. It was so hands-on, you don't end up watching but actually doing it. I took days to choose which one and decided on Lily's and I'm glad we chose them. The class begins with a visit to the market (very interesting, Chris being Belgian but knows so much). Followed by Lily (a Cambodian) touring us around her mini garden and then the actual class, which is set below their modern Cambodian style house. The experience felt so Cambodian, authentic. Plus their kid Austin is so cute. If you like a real Cambodian cooking class experience, this is for you.

Picked up from hostel by Chris then off to market to buy some of the ingredients. Nice to understand the intricacies of selecting bananas for the the dessert, the type and the degree of ripeness. Then to Chris and Lily's house, a new residence of a couple of months. Well set up with a lovely cool cross-breeze, individual gas burners and of course ingredients and kitchen tools. There were 4 of us the class, quite unhurried and time to sit and chat. Lily has some produce growing in the garden which we tried to identify before starting the class. We ended up with 3 courses, all delicious and luckily we were given a recipe book so our new found knowledge can be put into practice back home. A very enjoyable afternoon with lovely people. Thank you both.

Chef Lily is more than a Chef but a health coach and an artist. First we went to the market with Chris to buy some ingredients. He was kind enough to answer all my questions about different fruits, vegetables and dried ingredients. (It was my bad that i choose the afternoon class where some part of the market was closed. I strongly recommend you to take the morning class.) During the cooking class Chef Lily's knowledge about the ingredients and small tricks made the difference for me. I really enjoyed my afternoon and the meal i cooked with the help of Chef Lily. From one chef to another one: i would like to thank you for your knowledge, passion and hospitality. Everything was memorable. Instead of going out to eat, you can try to cook your own meal khmer style.
