We had a delicious dinner and enthralling conversation with Dimitris and Savvas in Athens at their lovely home. We were served authentic and tasty Greek food and very good red wine. Highly recommend to book a dinner with them if you are in Athens.

We arrived on a hot night in Psyrri, an inner city neighborhood of Athens, and were greeted at the door by the multi-lingual Dimitris (who speak four languages!!!!), who was one of our hosts for the evening. After a few minutes our fellow guests arrived-a family of three, mother father and daughter from Bogota Colombia, and a couple from Brazil and Lebanon living in Greece with Greek family roots. The group was joined by our other gracious host Savvas who was responsible for the truly lavish table decoration featuring a wonderful dinner service from Italy with crystal glassware and silver cutlery. We were ushered onto the terrace of the apartment and stood in the twilight gazing at the Acropolis which suddenly lit up for the evening in front of us! It was a truly magical experience to be standing there as we were served with a welcome cocktail. It was a Greek ‘Mojito’ made with Tsipouro a local Grappa-like drink with lots of mint and as it is an aperitif it was a perfect and cool way to start the evening and get our taste buds tingling. And they tingled for sure! We were seated at the large table on the terrace and were immediately served with delicious totally homemade Spanakopita (Spinach Pie) and Melitzanosalata (Aubergine dip) which was smoky and beautifully prepared. We started off with a wonderfully crisp ice cold white Greek wine to compliment the first course-it was wonderfully refreshing on a truly hot night in Athens. Our second course was stuffed courgettes (Kokolokithakia Yemista) which were simply stunning- as my partner cannot eat rice-they made one without -which was a really nice touch -and showed how much they take notice of people’s allergies or problems with food and adjust their dishes accordingly. They were served with a velvet smooth Avgolemono salsa (egg and lemon sauce) thoughtfully in a separate dish so one could have as much or as little as one wanted. This course was accompanied by a wonderful Greek Rose wine which matched the dish to perfection. The conversation around the table was really interesting and it was great to meet new people from other cultures and hear their stories. I had personally never met anyone from Colombia so it was very interesting to hear their opinion of current world events. As a foodie it was really incredible finding out what you can eat in the country and how some dishes are the same all over the world! The main course was truly a masterpiece - Souzsoukakia (Greek finger shaped meatballs with cumin), they were incredibly tasty and the cumin and other spices were perfectly balanced in a rich tomato sauce-a triumph! They were served with oven baked Greek style potatoes with lemon and herbs. There was also a crispy, cool fresh green salad to accompany the dish. This course was accompanied by a wonderful Greek red wine which was perfect for the meatballs. The atmosphere on the terrace was relaxed and really comfortable and time went by so quickly -it was a lovely surprise when we were served with the dessert-a Greek classic of Kaimaki flavoured ice cream (Buffalo milk ice cream mixed with Mastic-you can’t get more Greek than that!) with a sour cherry sauce which was absolutely delicious and very refreshing on such a hot evening. Luckily the terrace is so high that there is seemingly always a breeze to cool you down however hot it gets. What can I say about the hosts?-Absolutely top class chefs and waiters -they catered to every request and inquiry in several different languages and made us feel so welcome-nothing was too much trouble-every course was explained with a little story of the origin of the dish and all were homemade and all ingredients sourced locally from different areas of Greece including the three delicious wines. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a truly fine dining experience with two locals who have a passion for what they do and a level of hospitality rarely achieved anywhere in the world.
