A word about the experience
Discover the delicate taste of Indonesia's traditional cuisine in this 3-hour essential cooking workshop. Learn how to use and combine essential ingredients and enjoy cooking signature dishes such as Ayam Rica Rica (chicken coconut curry), Acar Ketimun (pickled cucumber), Rujak Manis (sweet & spicy pineapple) and Terong Balado (sweet & spicy braised eggplant). Prepare your taste buds for a mouthwatering experience while learning about Dutch-Indonesian history.
David is a Dutch hobby-chef with Indonesian roots. Both his parents grew up in Indonesia and being part of a food-loving family he spent a lot of time in the kitchen watching his mother cook Indonesian dishes. Over the past 15 years he became passionate about traditional as well as modern Indonesian cuisine. David is really passionate about the ingredients and the flavors involved in Indonesian cuisine and he would love to learn you about the mouthwatering dishes he cookes. Apart from his passion for Indonesian cooking David is very fond of Dutch & Indonesian history. Expect to learn more about Dutch and Indonesian history and get to know the historical significance of this Dutch 'Golden Age' area.
After meeting at the square in front Cafe 'De Drie Fleschjes', one of the oldest pubs in Amsterdam (established in 1650), you will learn more about the history of this specific neighborhood behind Amsterdam's Dam Square and New Church.
You will find out that the location of the cooking workshop is behind a locked fence which you can't enter without a key. This is one of the secret alleys that can be found all over the center of Amsterdam. Immerse yourself in the history of 17th century Amsterdam while finding out about the historical significance of this particular location.
Rest assured, once entering the cooking workshop location you are welcomed by a hospitable host to his modern apartment and kitchen. Essential ingredients of Indonesian cuisine are displayed at the kitchen table so you will notice the scent of oriental herbs and spices right away.
While enjoying a refreshing drink you will learn briefly about Dutch-Indonesian history and the major influence that Indonesian cuisine has had on Dutch food culture. Next to learning about how to use specific combinations of ingredients to create signature flavors you will be provided a personalized menu based on your dietary preferences.
After learning about Indonesian key ingredients, you will experience how to combine those ingredients step by step and prepare a variety of delicious tasteful Indonesian dishes. A fundamental part of Indonesian cooking is creating specific flavor combinations but, tasting mixtures and pastes and adjusting ingredients can be challenging. To do so you will learn how to recognize what ingredient or flavor should be added in order to make future cooking easier.
Last but not least, dinner will be served so prepare yourself for a mouthwatering experience! After a lovely dinner, you will receive recipes of the dishes cooked to re-create them at home.
