Taruna and Ash's story
My husband Ash and I grew up in New Delhi, the capital of India in close-knit middle class families. In fact, we lived in the same neighborhood couple of blocks apart but didn’t meet until couple of decades later. In the meantime, Ash had spent time in North Africa & Europe before settling down in US. Deciding to get married only after about four dates, we’ve now been together 19 years and counting. Growing up, life revolved around food, family and laughter. My mother was always cooking for family and friends and I, along with my sisters, helped in the kitchen from the age of 5 or so. Our house was small but always welcoming and open to extended family, neighbors and friends. Food was a constantly evolving, present, growing force bringing everyone together with stories and laughter. We literally lived from one meal to the next, with several courses of snacks in between! Over the years, Ash and I have owned and managed several restaurant and catering businesses in Washington DC area, Hawaii and Austin. Ash got his training at the premier Taj Mahal Hotel chain in India. A 4 year work opportunity based in North Africa took him travelling all over Europe, nurturing his love of good food and great service. His versatility with languages, passion for world cuisine and an impeccable sense of service gave him a foundation to be a great host. Following his move to the US in 1989, he had the opportunity to work at the renowned Bombay Club in Washington DC, a popular high-powered restaurant with patrons including President Bush Sr. and President Clinton. Within a few years, he opened his own restaurants in the DC area. Our restaurants were applauded by food critics from major publications; one in particular, the “Connaught Place” was voted as one of the top 40 in the Zagat Survey for DC area. Wanting to explore a different way of living, we moved to Hawaii in 2006. Our love of sustainable living and healthy food moved us to participate in two of the renowned Farmers' Markets - the North Shore Farmer’s Market and the Hawaii Kai Market on the island of Oahu. We now live in Austin TX and have showcased our food at the Texas Farmer’s Market at Lakeline, where we get to meet people who are genuinely interested in good food & healthy choices. Ash now has moved on to another line of business. I (Taruna), with years of experience in corporate communications and event planning , have been working for an iconic, well known Austin restaurant for the last 6 years. We still love to cook and entertain. Besides our "regular" jobs, we also run a small catering & event planning business and "host" cooking classes which seem more like dinner parties with close friends. We look at cooking as a fun, joyful and great bonding experience. We seek joy in sharing our love of good food, conversation and healthy living. We are constantly inspired by the sunshine in Texas, the bounty of our local farms, the ancient culinary traditions of India and flavors of other great cuisines of the world. Bon Appétit!
