Hi -- I'm Noor! I'm an international development professional, home chef, pseudo food blogger, entrepreneur and perpetual daydreamer. Cooking is one of my biggest passions and what fills much of my free time! I grew up living in seven countries before settling in New York, so I (naturally) love meeting new people all the time and connecting over a shared passion for global cuisines. I'd love to introduce you to the amazing cuisine that my husband and I have grown up with and still enjoy in our Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi home. I tend to cook hearty, home-style dishes that are often vegetarian, seasonal and influenced by my travels and a nomadic global upbringing. What to expect at Noor's place
First off, Noor and her husband Shifan, were incredibly warm and hospitable from the moment we stepped into their apartment. The mulled cider, coffee, tea and the assortment of crostinis were an amazing start to the morning. We were a little late as the other guests were finishing off a game but joined in on a couple of rounds of Coup before starting brunch. Shifan played the role of moderator for the board games and was super friendly and knowledgable. Second, the food was amazing. Noor made it a point to make sure everyone had enough to eat and drink. Everything was vegetarian and even though I'm not vegetarian, I didn't miss meat for a moment. The salad, the roast potatoes, the home made labneh and the shakshuka were delicious. After brunch we moved back to the living room for some more games (we played Carcassone). My favorite moment of the day was when Noor served up dessert which was a rasmalai tres leches cake with rose petals and pistachios. Looked beautiful, tasted even better. Would come back to any of Noor's events in a heartbeat!
Noor and her husband Shifan were absolutely fantastic and welcoming hosts during their Brunch and Board Games event this month. The concept for the event was unique and it was great to be paired with guests that had similar interests in board games. I felt like everyone actually made new friends there, which is hard to do sometimes in such a big city! Shifan did a great job breaking the ice while explaining and moderating the games that were new to some guests while Noor took care of serving the food she cooked us. Her care in cooking and catering to her guests was visible from the get-go. She kept a vegetarian palette in mind for a couple vegetarian guests, which worked well during brunch time, but she also cooks dishes with meat as well! Noor made sure everyone's cups were filled with either spiked cider, tea, or coffee at all times, and offered up seconds and thirds of each of her delicious brunch dishes. She also had plenty of snacks available right when we walked in and waited for the other guests! Her food was all so flavorful, and it was great to have such a range of dishes from eggs to crostinis to salad and dessert. If you attend one of Noor's events you are sure to walk out with a smile on your face and a delightfully full tummy!
